Creamy Peanut Butter Milkshake Recipe

I’m a huge fan of shakes, and this peanut butter milkshake recipe is probably my all-time fave.

You just can’t beat creamy ice cream with thick peanut butter.

And it’s super easy to modify too! I’ve got some terrific options below, including caramel and chocolate versions!

Ingredients:

This recipe is enough for 1-2 portions, depending on how big your glass is.

  • Vanilla Ice Cream* - use good quality ice cream since it makes up the base
  • Milk - to adjust the consistency and make it pourable
  • Smooth Peanut Butter** - for flavor. Use regular, smooth peanut butter for the best results. Natural peanut butter is a bit too oily and may split
  • Vanilla Paste/Extract - for extra sweetness

Optional Extras & Garnishes

  • *Caramel or Chocolate Ice Cream
  • **Almond Butter
  • Frozen Banana Chunks
  • Caramel Sauce
  • Hot Fudge / Chocolate Sauce
  • Melted Peanut Butter Drizzle
  • Mini Chocolate Chips
  • Chopped Nuts
  • Reese’s Pieces
  • Whipped Cream

How to Make the Best Peanut Butter Milkshake:

  1. Add about 200 grams of the ice cream to a blender with the milk, peanut butter, and vanilla.
  2. Blend until smooth, then add the last of the ice cream if you want it thicker.
  3. Pour the milkshake into a glass and serve.

Optional Extras

  • Add the frozen banana chunks to the blender for a naturally sweet and fruity finish.
  • Use caramel or chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla.
  • Pour caramel, melted peanut butter, and/or chocolate sauce into the glass before pouring the milkshake, and/or use it as a drizzle.
  • Top the milkshake with whipped cream, sauce, chocolate chips, chopped nuts, and/or Reese’s Pieces.

Recipe Tips

This milkshake recipe is super straightforward. Just add everything to a blender and let it do its thing. That said, I do have a few tips to make sure your shake is perfect:

  • Chill the glasses - before you start, pop your chosen glasses into the fridge or freezer (if they’re thick enough) so they’re nicely chilled.
  • Soften the ice cream - take it out of the freezer about 10-15 minutes before you start. That way, it’ll blend properly.
  • Add the milk first - when blending anything, it’s always best to add the liquid. That way, the blades have something to blitz through. So, be sure to add the milk, then the ice cream, and finally the peanut butter.

Recipe Variations

I already added a few fun extras to make this recipe extra special. But I have a few more I think you’ll love!

Reese’s Milkshake - drizzle chocolate sauce in the glass and add a little around the rim

Nutella Milkshake - swap the peanut butter for Nutella

Peanut Butter Oreo Milkshake - blend a few peanut butter Oreo cookies into the mix

Peanut Butter Cookie Shake - blend chocolate chip cookies into the mix

Healthy Vegan Peanut Butter Shake - use PB2 instead of peanut butter and dairy-free ice cream and milk

Peanut Butter and Jelly Milkshake - add a spoonful of jam or jelly and swirl it into the shake with a straw before serving

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just mix milk and peanut butter?

If all you’re after is a peanut buttery drink, yes, you can absolutely just mix PB and milk.

Like in my recipe for peanut butter chocolate milk, you’ll need to melt and cool the peanut butter first so it mixes better. From there, you can mix it with a spoon, use a milk frother, or shake it in a jar.

How to make a milkshake without ice cream?

It’s totally possible to make a milkshake without ice cream. But you have to know that the recipe won’t be as thick.

One option to maintain that thicker texture is to add coconut cream, frozen fruit (like bananas), or even ice.

Can this peanut butter milkshake be made ahead of time?

Even in the fridge, milkshakes will “melt” if you make them too far ahead.

So while you can technically make the milkshake ahead, I recommend only making it when you want to enjoy it.

That said, it should be okay in the fridge for about an hour.

Can I make milkshakes without a blender?

You can make milkshakes without a blender, but only if they don’t contain ice cream or any other frozen ingredients.

Immersions blenders work well with ice cream and frozen ingredients, but milk frothers don’t.

And you can’t shake a milkshake by hand if it has ice cream - it’ll be lumpy no matter how hard you try.

So, to make a milkshake without a blender, be sure only to include ingredients you can shake to blend, such as milk, coconut cream, and the flavor of your choice.
